Chrysler 4.7L V8 PowerTech Engine: Specs, Problems, and Reliability. The Chrysler 4.7 L V8 PowerTech is an eight-cylinder gasoline engine that firstly appeared in the 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee and after that (in 2000-2002) in Dodge vehicles (Ram, Dakota, Durango). The 4.7 L V8 was the first of the PowerTech family and was developed as a replacement for the 4.0 L inline-six engine designed by AMC and 316 V8s of Chrysler's LA family.

For some period, the new 4.7-liter V8 in Dodge models was being named as a 4.7 L Magnum engine, although it gets nothing to do with the previous 5.2 L Magnum. In 2002, the PowerTech family replenished with a 3.7-liter V6 model, that provided a very similar design with the V8 version.
